PT. PUPUK SRIWIDJAJA PALEMBANG MANAGES THE HAZARDOUS AND TOXIC MATERIAL IN TERMS OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ASPECTS

Abstract


Background : Despite its benefits to the production activities, the use of hazardous and toxic materials in any industrial activities could also pose a risk to the environment, human living and also any other living creatures. In order to avoid or at least minimize the risks of health and safety problems of the workers, it is important to manage hazardous and toxic materials well. The purpose of this research was to find out how PT. Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang manages the hazardous and toxic material in terms of occupational safety and health aspects.

Method: This research was a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The methods of the research are in-depth interviews, observation and documents reviews. The interviews were done to twelve informants, one of them are expert in relevant field.

Result : The results of the research showed that safety and health efforts done by PT. Pusri in order to manage hazardous and toxic materials still need to be improved. It is difficult to complete the material safety data sheets that had been ordered, insufficient emergency response system in the storage room, the transportation officer also has not yet safely equipped with protection, there are still workers who work without personal protective equipment and there is still hazardous and toxic materials waste existing without symbol on its packaging.

Conclusion: For a better future, workers should take material safety data sheets to the supplier at the time of acceptance hazardous and toxic materials. Besides, the quality of emergency response system in the storage room obviously needed to be improved and simulated too. Changing the no-longer adequate protective equipment for the transportation worker and improving facilities of hazardous waste management to prevent environmental contamination are the two things that also needed to be done.
