DEMENTIA AND ACTIVITY DAILY LIVING (ADL) DISTURBANCE OF ELDERLY IN PANTI SOSIAL TRESNA WERDHA WARGATAMA INDRALAYA

Abstract


Background : The projection Badan Pusat Statistik Showed number of elderly in Indonesia on 2005 – 2010 increase to 19 million people from 11,3 million people 0n 1990. That’s showing any number of elderly  will have dementia. Dementia is the fourth caused of elderly death after cardiac disease, cancer and stroke. The number of elderly with dementia in the world is 30 million and 15 % the number of elderly in Indonesia have dementia.

Method : The research is descriptive research to know about dementia and Activity Daily Living (ADL) disturbance elderly in Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Wargatama Inderalaya. The research sample is all of elderly in panti social Wargatama.The researcher was obtained data with active interview using questionnaire.

Result : The result is 69,70 % elderly with dementia are woman and 59,46 % is 60 – 74 years old. The Activity Daily Living (ADL) disturbance is eating activity (54,5%), continence (30,3%), wearing (42,4%), toileting (48,5%), ambulasi (54,5%) and bathing (30,3%). In the place, elderly with dementia can do Activity Daily Living independently.

Conclusion : As a nursing, the keynote to give caregiver elderly with dementia is planing and manage the activity that can do someone to prevention frustration, self esteem decreased and stress. For example, giving motivation and emotional support with increasing friendship through staff and consistent activity and friendly visiting.
